Informal Physical Reasoning Processes

چکیده

A fundamental question is whether Turing machines can model all reasoning processes. We introduce an existence principle stating that the perception of the physical existence of any Turing program can serve as a physical causation for the application of any Turing-computable function to this Turing program. The existence principle overcomes the limitation of the outputs of Turing machines to lists, that is, recursively enumerable sets. The principle is illustrated by productive partial functions for productive sets such as the set of the Gödel numbers of the Turing-computable total functions. The existence principle and productive functions imply the existence of physical systems whose reasoning processes cannot be modeled by Turing machines. These systems are called creative. Creative systems can prove the undecidable formula in Gödel’s theorem in another formal system which is constructed at a later point in time. A hypothesis about creative systems, which is based on computer experiments, is

A Framework to Support Research on Informal Inferential Reasoning

Informal inferential reasoning is a relatively recent concept in the research literature. Several research studies have defined this type of cognitive process in slightly different ways. In this paper, a working definition of informal inferential reasoning based on an analysis of the key aspects of statistical inference, and on research from educational psychology, science education, and mathem...

Scaffolding Students’ Informal Inference and Argumentation

This paper focuses on developing students’ informal ideas of inference and argumentative skills. This topic is of current interest to many researchers and teachers of statistics. We study fifth graders’ learning processes in an exploratory interdisciplinary learning environment that uses TinkerPlots to scaffold and extend students’ statistical reasoning. The careful design of the learning traje...

Preliminary Development of a Formalism for Embodied Computation and Morphogenesis

The theory of embodied computation, like the theory of embodied cognition, provides opportunities as well as challenges. On one hand, such computation is intimately connected with its physical realization, both because postMoore’s Law densities demand more direct exploitation of physical processes, but also because the purposes of embodied computing are often physical (e.g., self-assembly, micr...

Reason!: Improving Informal Reasoning Skills

The goal of the Reason! project is to develop an effective and affordable method for improving informal reasoning. In this paper we sketch the background to the project, briefly describe the Reason! software, and report positive results from a detailed study of the first full-scale trial. Introduction One of the greatest challenges facing the Australian educational system in the coming years is...

Informal reasoning assessment using verbal reports of thinking to improve multiple-choice test validity /

This paper examines some challenges to the validity of existing multiple-choice critical thinking tests and proposes how the validity of such tests might be put on a sounder footing. Several plausible hypotheses are proposed for explaining variance on critical thinking tests other than the hypothesis that the variance is due to differences in critical thinking. There is no evidence to support o...
